Strive to be the main character in your life, otherwise you’ll end up being an extra in someone else's.

Some people are ok being the extra. They enjoy being the one who supports the main character as they trip and stumble through unfamiliar circumstances. Public humiliation or messy steps are not for everyone.

But for those of us who feel called to be more than just a supporting role in this life, we have to understand that our mistakes will be seen and will make us look like we don’t have it all together. We have to let go of the idea that we are going to be the main character, but somehow do it without a main character story arch. No great main character ever got to the end of a good story without first making a mess of something. Things will get messy… And that is the point!

To be clear, that doesn’t mean each messy step has to be gigantic or that you need to drastically change everything about yourself. But, to be a good main character, you first have to make a mess. Those messes can be small and easy to clean up, or they can be big and take time to repair. Either way, being the main character in your own story means letting go of a perfect persona and giving way to your true authentic self.

In the famous words of Andy Dwyer, “my life is a total mess, and I love it.”

So go make a mess. We’ve got this!
