This is It’s Only in Trying — a weekly podcast about the beautiful messiness of becoming.
I want to ask something… What armor are you wearing?
Ok, can I admit something? I have no idea what I am doing. Not just here in this random podcast, but, like… in general. I literally have no real idea what I am doing, ever. I have no idea if I am doing my job right, parenting right, being a friend right, taking care of myself right. But, the older I get and the more adults I meet… The more clear it is to me that, actually, none of us know what the hell we’re doing.
My goodness it would be so great if we could all just admit it out loud. Then we could all just stop performing and exhausting ourselves. Maybe laugh a little more? Admitting out loud that I have no idea what I am doing, actually feels pretty freeing. It allows me to feel like I’m no longer hiding under a mask or wearing heavy, proverbial armor. Armor that was piled on me, one piece at a time… embarrassing moment, by embarrassing moment.
Well, I don’t feel like lugging this shit around anymore. Before this admission, it’s like my body and mind had been preparing for a battle that didn’t actually exist and probably wouldn’t actually ever happen.
So, ya. I don’t know what I am doing. But I’m pretty sure, if I just keep putting one foot in front of the other, giving myself grace, giving those around me grace, I’ll get there.
Moral of the story? You don’t have to pretend for anyone. Free yourself from the armor weighing you down… Whatever the armor was for. See what it feels to be out from under it. We all might see each other a little more clearly if we do it together.
Just remember, you’re doing better than you think.
