This is It’s Only in Trying — a weekly podcast about the beautiful messiness of becoming.

Everyone should pay attention to the people who make their souls come alive.

Our society puts so much pressure on us to find a singular person to put all our hopes and dreams in. To be this one true love. But to only believe in the romantic, fairytale, boy meets girl, love… deprives us of enjoying the full range of love that life has to offer. And it leaves out the one that I think is the most important. The most important love comes from the people who choose us. Who stay, not because they birthed us or signed a binding contract to stay in sickness or in health.

Those people, the ones who make that flame light up in your chest, are the people who see us. They make the tension in our bodies ease. There is no more show. You are nothing but yourself - unique wounds and all.

I think all any of us wants is to be seen, like, truly, truly seen, for exactly who we are. Exactly who we are without any judgment or ridicule. For those precious moments when you are together with the ones who chose you, who see you… your bones no longer ache with the weight of expectation. Our thoughts no longer need to be run through a filter, and can race right out of our mouths without fear of eventually needing to be retracted.

For those people, the ones who make the rest of the world fall away, I am grateful.

They hold our hands when we are angry, sad, indignant. They take our side when we are being irrational, no matter the cost to themselves. They don’t let you sit in the dark when you are at your worst, and they never steal your sunshine when you are at your best. They keep you grounded, while telling you, you have wings. They wipe our tears, they show up when it counts - never once keeping score. There is no tally sheet, there is no caveated invitation. On good days and bad, the ones who choose us make us feel seen. They open all the bits of our hearts. And that feels just as magical as any traditional fairy tale love.

My ask? Tell the ones who choose you that you love them. Tell them how they make you come alive, how they make you laugh, how you appreciate that you are seen, because they exist. And how lucky you feel that you can do the same for them.

Because of our soul mates, our friends, the ones who see us, we can all do a little better than we think.
